A tornado is a very strong wind that goes round and round in the shape of a tall, thin, chimney. It can reach speeds of over 480 kilometers per hour. Tornadoes make a huge noise when they arrive, but they normally only last for about fifteen minutes.
It is very difficult to know when a tornado is going to happen. They are one of the greatforces of nature.
In the Midwest of the U.S.A., from the Gulf of Mexico to the north of Canada, they usually arrive between the months of March and July causing death and damage.
Between 1900 and 2005, around 13, 700 people died in the U.S.A. because tornadoes.
